David Hauseman began his career at Heery International, with a focus on modular building systems. He moved to Murray Associates Architects in Harrisburg, Pa., in 1973 to work on a prototype school using building systems for the State of Pennsylvania. In 1979, he left Niles Bolton Associates to found The Hauseman Group.

With more than 35 years experience practicing architecture, Hauseman is responsible for the design and execution of more than 60 hotels, office buildings, office park projects, retail developments, and government facilities locally, nationally, and internationally.

Hauseman played a key role in the planning and organization of the city of Alpharetta, Ga. In the UK, he led major roll-out programs for hotels, including the Holiday Inn prototype and Hawthorne Suites Europe. Most notably, Hauseman was the client team project manager for The Four Seasons Hotel, a $90 million project in Dublin, Ireland.

Hauseman has been a guest lecturer at Georgia Institute of Technology, Clemson University, and Southern Polytechnic State University. He serves on the Atlanta Building Enclosure Council for the National Building Sciences and is a member of the AIA.

For the last 20 years, James Walton Howard Jr. has been an executive-level manager for several lumber and hardwoods facilities. He spent two years serving as Vice President for Lumber Yard Operations where he managed two kiln-drying lumber yards. Currently, Howard is the president and CEO of Atlanta Hardwood Corporation, Hardwood Incorporated, and Huntersville Hardwoods, Inc. These family-owned businesses specialize in the distribution and manufacturing of hardwood forest products. Howard further shows his commitment to the forestry industry and leadership capability with his involvement in numerous business, civic, and educational organizations. Some of his more recent undertakings include a position as First Vice-Chair for the Hardwood Forest Federation and membership on the Skyland Trail Advisory Board.

George R. Judd has served as our Chief Executive Officer since October 2008, and as our President and Chief Operating Officer since May 2004. Mr. Judd has also served as a member of our board since October 2008. Previously, he worked for Georgia-Pacific Corporation in a variety of positions managing both inside and outside sales, national accounts and most recently as Vice President of Sales and Eastern Operations since 2002. From 2000 until 2002, Mr. Judd worked as Vice President of the North and Midwest regions of the Distribution Division. He served as Vice President of the Southeast region from 1999 to 2000. Mr. Judd serves on the board of the Building Products Institute in Washington, D.C., and he is past Chair of the National Lumber & Building Material Dealers Association. He also serves on the board of the Girl Scouts of Georgia. He graduated from Western Connecticut State University in 1984 with a Bachelor's degree in Marketing.

Luther H. Randall, III, is Chairman and CEO of Randall Brothers, Inc., a privately held company based in Atlanta, Georgia.  Founded in 1885 by Mr. Randall’s great grandfather Harvey Gatewood Randall, Randall Brothers is the Southeast’s leading manufacturer and seller of architectural millwork and building materials. Mr. Randall has served as President of Randall Brothers, Inc. since 1989 and assumed the additional title of Chief Executive Officer in 1998.  Throughout his tenure since joining the family business in 1984, Mr. Randall has performed various roles at the company including Chief Financial Officer, among others.  Mr. Randall is the fourth generation of the Randall family to lead the company, which has continued to grow by focusing on servicing contractors in the metro Atlanta area as well as independent dealers throughout the Southeast.  Randall Brothers has a long history of innovation and customer service, providing an energetic platform for Randall Brothers to grow alongside the country's best professional builders and dealers.

Mr. Randall is member of the World Presidents Organization, the Phoenix Executive Forum, and has frequently appeared as a featured speaker on topics related to the current financial crisis.

Michael T. Rehwinkel

Michael T. Rehwinkel has been in the wood and paper products industry for more than 30 years. Currently, he is the president of wood products at Georgia-Pacific, a leading manufacturer and marketer of tissue packaging, paper, pulp, and building products and related chemicals. Prior to this position, Rehwinkel served Georgia-Pacific in multiple executive-level positions since 2001. He is also a trustee for the American Plywood Association and a member of the Advisory Board for Emory Eye Hospital. Rehwinkel is affiliated with the Corrugated Packaging Alliance Board, the Alexis de Tocqueville Society of Atlanta, and the Employees for the Arts Program. He received a B.S. in accounting from William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Miss., graduating magna cum laude. He also completed the Advanced Management Program at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business in 2002.

Michael Bell is a President of Kentucky Millwork, responsible for oversight of the office and plant.  He has 36 years experience in the woodworking industry and currently serves on the Joint Standards Committee for the Architectural Woodwork Institute, is the Education Chairman for the Architectural Woodwork Institute and serves as an Inspector for the American Arbitration Association.  He studied Design at Southern Illinois University in the early 70’s under the noted futurist R. Buckminster Fuller. He has conducted numerous seminars for AIA regional meetings on the subject of specifying architectural woodwork.

John Bradfield, the director of environmental affairs for the Composite Panel Association, has 24 years of experience in the wood manufacturing industry and specializes in CARB compliance. Prior to his current position, Bradfield has served the Composite Panel Association in a variety of technical capacities, including directing CPA certification programs and supervising CPA labs. Bradfield began his career in particleboard with Union Camp.

Bradfield received his B.S. and M.S. in wood science and technology from North Carolina State University. Bradfield also attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

David Bueche, Ph.D., is a marketing representative for Hoover Treated Wood Products and has more than 25 years experience in the construction industry. In addition to his hands-on experience as a carpenter, superintendent, and project manager, Bueche was a research scientist at Colorado State University and taught courses in construction technology and forest products. He was also a field representative for APA–The Engineered Wood Association, as well as an applications engineer for the American Galvanizers Association. Additionally, Bueche serves on multiple National Fire Protection Association committees that develop standards on the performance of materials in fire and building construction, and he is on the board of directors of the Forest Products Society. He is a member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, the Society of Wood Science and Technology, and is active in the International Code Council.

Keith Coonce, president of Panelized Structures Inc., has been in the roof structure industry since 1984 and with Panelized Structures since 1990.  He is a past president of the Structural Roof Erectors Association (SREA).  Mr. Coonce will lead a discussion on opportunities in the commercial construction market and provide a roof erector's perspective on effective marketing approaches that designers, manufacturers and developers can consider when developing projects in the nonresidential market. Keith will also discuss the different methods of erection to allow for a safer jobsite and shortened construction schedule.

Devon Dartnell currently leads the Georgia Forestry Commission’s Biomass Program and is responsible for projects and issues relating to forest bio-energy and biomass utilization. Prior to working for the Georgia Forestry Commission, Dartnell held numerous positions including 16 years as an engineer in the traditional energy industry and manager for Schlumberger Oilfield Services in Alaska, Brazil, Canada, Venezuela, Nigeria, Texas, and Louisiana. This experience gives Dartnell a unique perspective of the energy industry.

Dartnell is a graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology with a B.S. in electrical engineering. He serves as a board member of the Madison-Morgan Conservancy, the Middle Georgia Clean Cities Coalition, and the Madison Green Space Commission.

Chris DeBlois holds three degrees from MIT, including a master’s in civil (structural) engineering. He moved to Atlanta 20 years ago to work on skyscrapers, but has been a partner in Palmer Engineering Company since 1992.  Chris is recognized for his experience with timber and wood framed construction and with incorporating these materials into complex steel, concrete, and masonry projects.  Chris considers the Northeast Georgia Museum of Folk Pottery and the Destination Visitors Center for the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville, North Carolina two of his most satisfying recent projects, and is happy to tell you that the Tampa Box Factory conversion in Ybor City, Florida won one of three national Platinum Awards for 2007 renovations from Building Design and Construction.  Newly opened facilities incorporating wood structures in exciting ways include the Chattahoochee Nature Center Discovery Center in Roswell, Georgia, and the Toco Hills Library in Decatur, Georgia.  Chris is an occasional contributor to Fine Homebuilding Magazine and the Journal of Light Construction.  Finally, Chris has recently started CFD Structural Engineering, LLC, a sister company to PEC specializing in residential and wood and timber commercial projects and expert consulting.

Leigh Denham is the national sales manager for Southern Shutter. He has also served the company as a department manager and as a plant operations manager. Denham has 13 years of experience in the shutter industry, holding a variety of positions in manufacturing and installation.

Prior to his current position at Southern Shutter, Denham owned and operated Denham Sales for six years. Denham Sales was an independent sales group representing a variety of millwork and millwork-related products, including Southern Shutter. Denham served as the director of human resources for Simcala and the director of resources management for MHJ Group.

Andrew Dinkman

Chantiers Chibougamau

Andrew Dinkman is the southern regional manager of Nordic Engineered Wood, a division of Chantiers Chibougamau in Chibougamau, Quebec. Prior to his appointment at Chantiers Chibougamau, Dinkman served as the director of engineered wood products at Universal Forest Products in Atlanta from 1998 to 2001.

Dinkman began his career in the wood industry at TrusJoist Canada, where he worked for two years before accepting another position in the lumber industry in Vancouver, British Columbia. In 1988, Dinkman joined the roof truss industry, and from 1990 to 1997, he opened and ran a successful truss company in Edmonton, Alberta. Dinkman was part of Sunpine’s LVL mill start-up, which is presently owned by West Fraser in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.

Dinkman received his degree in civil engineering from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.

Charles Eastman is a pioneer of AEC CAD, developing research 3D and early parametric modeling systems starting in the middle 1970s. His research group at GA Tech currently works with industry groups to develop new generation parametric modeling tools and integrating tools together. He currently has projects with the the Precast Concrete Institute and the Charles Pankow Foundation, and with GSA, working on courthouse BIM tools. These include automated design guide review, automated energy, cost, space and circulation assessment for early concept designs. He speaks regularly to industry groups.

In November 2006, Chuck was awarded the BIM 2006 BuildingSMART Open Data Award by the International Alliance for Interoperability. He is co-author, with Paul Teicholz, Rafael Sacks and Kathleen Liston, of the Building Information Modeling Handbook, that came out in March of 2008 from John Wiley and Sons. In 1999 he also authored Building Product Models, published by CRC Press. He is author of over 80 papers on BIM, parametric modeling and on databases and product models.

Craig Elias has 16 years of architectural woodwork experience. Until recently, Elias served as president of Elias Studios, a firm that specialized in estate-level custom architectural woodwork and manufactured a broad range of products, including doors, cabinets, paneling, and custom moulding. He joined AWI as a manufacturing member in 2004 and served on the QCC Board of Directors for two years before becoming the program director of the AWI Quality Certification Corporation (AWI QCC) in 2008.

Elias’ six years of experience as a board member of the QCC and a health-based organization, the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance, has given him insight into not-for-profit operations and the effectiveness of and accountability to boards of directors. For the health-based association, Elias helped start initiatives at the committee level, where he worked in successful partnership with the association staff as a volunteer. Elias holds a degree in journalism from the University of Colorado.

Jeff is a Project Manager at Pierce and Pierce Millwork, where he estimates commercial and residential projects in the Southeastern United States and oversees their execution.  Pierce and Pierce Millwork remains dedicated to providing quality cutting edge products and services, and holds active memberships in several dynamic industry groups that Jeff is also involved with such as Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI), National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), and National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA).

Jeff is a graduate of the University of Denver’s Daniel College of Business, and holds a degree in Real Estate and Construction Management.  After graduation he worked with a large homebuilder in Denver, CO building production homes before moving to Great Exuma, Bahamas.  While on Great Exuma, Jeff acted as Purchasing Manger and Superintendent for a resort community, building custom homes and high-end condominiums.  Upon moving to Atlanta, Jeff renovated homes in and around Atlanta’s older neighborhoods such as Grant Park and Virginia-Highlands.

Repro Products, Inc. specializes in document creation and imaging solutions. Whether it is reprographic and color printing services, state-of-the-art printers and copiers or the latest Autodesk design software, Repro Products is the total solutions provider to the architectural, engineering and construction industries in Atlanta and the Southeast. 
The Color Spot focuses on providing customers with innovative wide format graphic services, including vehicle wraps, banners and signs, floor and window graphics, job site signage and indoor and outdoor signage. 
Bob’s thirty years in the reprographic industry uniquely qualify him to address all aspects of the printing business, including the latest technology.  Bob has been a pioneer in helping clients achieve cost recovery for printing services.  He has successfully implemented On Site Services (OSS), also known as Facilities Management (FM) solutions in several major architectural firms in the Atlanta metro area.  These firms have been able to capture reimbursable client expenses for print, copy, fax and scan activities and turn their plotting and reprographic costs into profit centers. 

Bob Feldberg was recipient on behalf of the company of the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year award in 2005.  Bob and his team have also consistently received awards over the years from Xerox, Hewlett-Packard, Canon, Autodesk and other manufacturers for sales and service excellence.

Michael Gamble is licensed architect and associate professor with tenure in the College of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Gamble teaches required courses at the graduate and undergraduate level in architectural design and construction detailing, and offers seminars on architecture/urbanism, public space, and typology.    He is also a partner in the Design Firm Gamble and Gamble Architects which has received regional and national recognition for their built work, including the American Institute of Architects Atlanta Chapter Emerging Voice Award; the American Institute of Architects Georgia Chapter Merit Award as well an Atlanta Chapter Honor and Merit Award.  G+G's work has been exhibited in numerous regional shows and cited in a variety of local and regional magazines.  In 2006, G+G won first place in the Sustainable House Competition sponsored by Southface Energy Institute, Kendada Fund and Charis Community Housing and in 2009, won First Place in the Rethinking the Clermont Hotel Competition sponsored by the Hotel.
 
Gamble received the Bachelor of Architecture from Auburn University in 1989, a Master of Architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1990, and a Master of Design Studies with Distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1996.

Russell Gentry is a structural engineer and building materials researcher.  He is an Associate Professor of Architecture at Georgia Tech.  His research focuses on technical performance aspects of building materials, components, and assemblies.  His work has considered mature building materials and systems, with ongoing projects in wood and concrete masonry, and on emerging building materials, with work in FRP (fiber reinforced polymers) and bio-based residues.   In his work, technical aspects include structural and mechanical performance, weathering and durability, constructability, material and component representation issues, and environmental impact.  At Georgia Tech, Dr. Gentry teaches courses on structural materials and systems, environmental impact of construction, and building energy.

Greco  is a Design Principal & Director of the Education Studio at Lord, Aeck & Sargent. As a Design Principal, Joe leads the design efforts for projects across all studios and offices. He promotes the firm’s core design values in every project, including the ideals of Permanence, Expression of Structure, Innovation and Economy, Integration of Systems and Technology, Timelessness, Space and Light, and Material Expression. A LEED-accredited architect, Joe is a leader of the firm’s sustainable design programs and firmly believes that architecture should minimize the negative impact of construction on the environment and create a restorative, positive experience for its inhabitants.
In addition, Joe serves as the Director of the Education Studio and is responsible for setting the studio’s direction, which plans and designs learning environments for the institutions of higher learning, government and non-profit sectors, as well as private K-12 programs.

Rodney Hardison’s career in wood preservation spans nearly 20 years with Arch and its predecessor company, Hickson Corporation. Originally an engineer who designed treating plants, Hardison also served as a sales and service representative and, for nine years, as manager of fire retardants. Arch Wood Protection manufactures wood treating chemicals and has developed some of the most recognizable brands of treated wood, including Wolmanized® Wood and Dricon® fire retardant treated wood.

Alan Harp serves as the furniture design and CNC instructor at the Advanced Wood Products Laboratory (AWPL) at Georgia Tech’s College of Architecture.  As a certified AlphaCAM and ArtCAM instructor, he has been teaching CNC courses for the past seven years to industry professionals and Georgia Tech students.  These courses focus on the materials, processes and technology found in furniture design and manufacturing. Thirty five of his Georgia Tech students’ pieces have been finalists in the AWFS and IWF student design competitions and displayed in other national competitions.  Several pieces of his own work have also been shown in national exhibitions.

Mr. Harp is a graduate of Georgia Tech with a BS and MS degree in Industrial Design.  His Master’s degree project focused on CNC production of solid wood furniture. 

Prior to his work at AWPL, Mr. Harp worked at Georgia Tech’s Center for Rehabilitation Technology for 12 years.  While there, he designed and built over 80 vocational rehabilitation products for people with physical disabilities.  Mr. Harp currently holds 15 Georgia Tech Records of Invention for his work at Georgia Tech.

Greg Heuer

Greg Heuer has been training since 1960. He delivers hands-on programs to thousands of construction industry professionals and educators on many topics related to architectural woodwork, the Quality Standards, and the proper specification and use of wood.

After graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in music education, Heuer taught high school band in Michigan and conducted show bands in Reno, Nevada. He returned to Chicago in the 1970s to manage his father’s woodworking firm.

Active participation in the Chicago chapter of the AWI taught Heuer the value of AWI membership to his firm and to the design community of Chicago. In 1987, he joined AWI as a member of the professional staff, and he currently travels approximately 100 days each year visiting AWI chapters, design professionals, and members of the construction industry to provide technical support. An enthusiastic speaker, Heuer has presented training and information to diverse audiences at international gatherings, national conventions, regional meetings, chapter events, and individual offices. He is also a certified instructor for Motorcycle Safety Foundation courses.

Since 1990, Heuer has served as staff liaison for Quality Standards Illustrated, pioneering the migration from cut-and-paste, type-set proofs to desktop-published books with electronic versions on CD-ROM. He has also been instrumental in the improvement of the AWI Cost of Doing Business Report and the updating of the AWI operational estimating system, the Cost Book. The Design Pro Presentations, prepared in PowerPoint and published on disc for the use of AWI members, have won national praise.

Danny Heatherly

Danny Heatherly is the owner of Barkclad Natural Products and has been in the timber industry for more than 20 years. Heatherly began as a residential contractor, building homes in the western North Carolina region for 10 years. He then formed Mountain Timber Inc., which manages timber divisions known for harvesting hardwoods. Currently, he is the owner of Barkclad Natural Products, where he is in the beginning stages of producing what he calls ECOBARK. This new product is “green,” meaning it is made from recycled material. Heatherly also has been awarded the U.S. patent on the only simulated bark siding, roofing, and interior accents made out of simulated material that resembles natural bark. C.T. “Kip” Howlett Jr. is President of the Hardwood Plywood and Veneer Association (HPVA) in Reston VA, joining the trade association in September, 2007. HPVA represents the North American manufacturers of hardwood plywood, veneer, and engineered flooring and their value chain including suppliers, distributors, and fabricators. HPVA develops national consensus standards for the industry, provides laboratory testing and certification services, promotes the products of its members, and represents the industry in public policy venues.

Mr. Howlett was a Vice President of the American Chemistry Council and Executive Director of its Chlorine Chemistry Council for 11 years. Previous to that responsibility, he was with Georgia‐Pacific for over 19 years holding a variety of positions including Vice President of Environment and Government Affairs. He is a lawyer with a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Willamette University College of Law in Salem, OR and a BA degree from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore MD.

He resides in McLean VA with his wife Marybeth and 8 year old son.

Cathy Marx Kaake is a registered Professional Engineer and Certified Floodplain Manager.  She holds a master’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Wisconsin.  Ms. Kaake has more than 30 years of experience in the structural wood products industry, and is currently Senior Director of Engineered & Framing Markets with the Southern Forest Products Association in suburban New Orleans.  She is a primary author of the Raised Floor Design and Construction Guide, and active in several floodplain management associations.

Greg Kasten is president of Mortensen Woodwork.  The company’s annual volume is approximately $20 million.  He oversees all operations, and sales, and devotes a good portion of his time to project management.  He believes working in this industry for his entire career and being directly or indirectly involved as a project manager or overseeing project management has giving him a great vision of what is successful and what is not.

Richard Kleiner is Director of Treated Lumber Markets for the Southern Forest Products Association.  Founded in 1915, SFPA is one of the oldest trade associations in the country, representing the Southern Pine lumber manufacturing industry and affiliate treaters and laminators.   

Kleiner joined SFPA in 1998 as a Marketing Manager, eventually became Director of Industrial Markets, and then assumed his current responsibilities in 2003.  His role includes promotion efforts for a wide range of applications suitable for the use of pressure-treated wood products, including outdoor decks, marine construction, and termite-resistant framing.  As a resource to the building industry and trade media, Kleiner is called upon to provide guidance on many topics of interest, including code compliant use of pressure-treated lumber, introduction of new wood preservatives, moisture management and mold prevention.  Most recently, his efforts have focused on promotion of wood-framed raised floor systems throughout the Southern United States through the Raised Floor Living campaign.    

Kleiner was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he still resides.  During his service with the U.S. Air Force, he attended Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma, earning a degree in Mass Communications.  Following military service, Kleiner served as public relations director for the Louisiana Chemical Association.

Before joining iLevel by Weyerhauser, Lee held buyer positions for Southern Yellow Pine and Georgia Pacific, and he was a structural frame designer for Engineered Lumber Products. While working in outside sales for Weyerhauser, Lee received the Sales Top Achievement Recognition (S.T.A.R.) award in 2003 and 2004.

Chris Leffel began his career in the composite panel industry in 1985 with the Medite Corporation, one of the world’s first producers of MDF.

With 24 years of experience in the industry, Leffel has held a number of sales management, marketing, and product development positions. He has been instrumental in developing and bringing new technologies and performance features in composite panels to the marketplace. These products have included no added formaldehyde, no added urea formaldehyde, moisture resistance, fire resistance, and powder coatable qualities, among other innovations.

Prior to rejoining SierraPine in 2006 as its vice president, Leffel was the senior vice president for the Composite Panel Association, headquartered in Leesburg, Va. During his five years with the CPA, Leffel managed all the marketing and technical activities of the association. He also advocated for the North American industry over a broad spectrum of issues with elected officials and federal and state regulators.

Leffel is regularly invited to speak at various events and conferences on composite panel industry trends and opportunities. He also provides insights to many industry publications. Of particular focus, he has been speaking nationally on how composite panels contribute to green building objectives and standards.

Leffel holds a B.S. in forest and range management from Washington State University.

Munyan is past president of the AWI Quality Certification Corporation and a member of the AIA MASTERSPEC review committee. Munyan has taught a variety of construction courses at Central Piedmont Community College in the college curriculum and Corporate and Continuing Education Department for 24 years. Kellogg in the petrochemical industry. While with M. W. Kellogg, he spent 3 ½ years working on special projects in Trinidad and Saudi Arabia.  Other work included a four-year stay with the Texas Highway Department in the Fort Worth District Office as a Senior Resident Engineer, as well as engineering positions with two small consulting firms.  David holds a degree in Civil Engineering from Georgia Tech, is a member of ASTM D20, Plastics, and D07, Wood Committees as well as ASCE, AISC and has his professional engineering licenses in Georgia, Alabama, and Texas.

Josh is the director of technical support and training for RISA Technologies and has been employed by RISA for the last seven years.  During that time he has worked on the technical development and implementation of numerous design codes into the RISA family of programs. This covers a broad range of subjects including structural stability, floor vibrations, connection design, foundation design and seismic detailing. 

Josh’s focus (and the focus of RISA Technologies) over the last 18 months has been on developing and improving the analysis / design tools available for commercial wood structures.  For this project an emphasis has been placed on the design of wood shear walls and the analysis of flexible diaphragms.

Prior to his time at RISA he served as a engineer at a large industrial engineering and construction firm.  He has primarily designed structures for refineries, petrochemical plants, power plants and nuclear waste processing facilities.  However, he insists that the most challenging project that he ever worked on was the engineering remodel of a two story, wood framed house.

Richard Poindexter is the specification and specialty products manager for Columbia Forest Products in the Eastern United States. He regularly conducts green training seminars for architects, designers, distributors, and fabricators. Poindexter also works with a team on the development and sale of CFP’s specialty product offering.

Poindexter graduated from North Carolina State University in 1995 with a B.S. in wood products and a minor in business management. He is a LEED Accredited Professional.

Poindexter is also a member of the board of directors for the USGBC Piedmont Triad N.C. chapter and represents the chapter on the USGBC Southeast Regional Council.

Art graduated from N. C. Bryan received a master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Clemson University.  Before joining APA in 1990, Bryan worked as a consulting structural engineer and a materials technician.  He is a registered professional engineer.

Randy Scott is Vice President of Operations at Southern Staircase. Scott has been with Southern Staircase since March 1998. He is a graduate of Georgia Tech, with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Scott has responsibility for manufacturing, field operations, production planning, inventory control, purchasing, technical support, and design.

Scott has worked to transform Southern Staircase into technology leaders in their industry. Under Scott’s leadership, Southern Staircase implemented the use of three- and five-axis CNC routers and CNC lathes. Southern Staircase has also developed and implemented a wide variety of custom software applications that automate design, reduce errors, and reduce material consumption.

Since joining the Southern Staircase Team, he has implemented a variety of initiatives that have improved management of the company, including the development and implementation of incentive programs for select hourly positions; reduction of manufacturing cycle times for various products, which has resulted in improved customer service and reduced operating cost; implementation of a first-class fleet management program; and selection, hire, and development of key members of the management team who are prepared to meet the company’s future challenges. Scott has also played a key role in effectively managing the company in up and down business cycles.

Prior to joining Southern Staircase, Scott worked for 18 years for Coats American, a UK-based textile company. During his career at Coats, he held a variety of management positions in manufacturing. He also worked for one year as a product marketing manager. Most notably, Scott served as Coats’ plant manager at the Marion, N.C. sewing thread plant. With 720 employees, 565,000 square feet, and 10,000 unique products, it is the world’s largest sewing thread finishing plant.

Scott serves on the advisory board of the Advanced Wood Products Laboratory at Georgia Tech. He has also served on the board of directors and the executive committee of the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce.

Matt Yaun

Matthew (Matt) Yaun is a highly decorated US Air Force veteran and he is using acquired skills to pursue a career of a different sort. Yaun is employed with Cox Industries as the Director of Sales and Marketing. His position is multi-faceted and encompasses an array of duties. Yaun leads a team of 5 VPs who oversee a marketing team consisting of six employees, as well as a sales force of 50 individuals encompassing the residential, industrial and international business units.

Yaun officially joined the Cox team in January of 2006 as an inside sales representative for the Eutawville facility. In June of 2006 he was promoted to Corporate Development for Cox Industries headquartered in Orangeburg, SC. In November of 2007, Yaun became Director of Sales and Marketing, where he continues to provide leadership to those teams, integrate business development activities, and collaborate with the executive leadership team to determine company strategy.

Yaun attended Davidson College in NC from 1986-1990 on an Air Force scholarship. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1990 and was a Distinguished Graduate from ROTC. Yaun was commissioned as an Air Force officer in 1990 and began flight training at Mather AFB, CA. From 1992-1996 he was stationed at Maguire AFB in New Jersey on active duty as a navigator. Yaun progressed through flight training to achieve instructor and evaluator qualifications. He was chosen as the executive officer for the 305th Operations Group in support of 3000 troops. In the fall of ‘96 Yaun attended Squadron Officer’s School and was a Distinguished Graduate. He trained to fly special operations out of Charleston AFB in South Carolina and again rose to examiner status. Yaun was given the responsibility of operations chief and alert force mission commander and he eventually became a flight commander.        

In 2000, Yaun transferred to Air Force Reserves and attended pilot training at Columbus AFB in Mississippi. He was a recipient of a military training award for leadership of his training class. From 2001 to 2005, Yaun flew in command of the C-17 aircraft with over 150 combat missions encompassing 500 hours of combat flight time fighting the global war on terror in Afghanistan and Iraq. 

To date Yaun has logged over 4,000 flight hours in the C-141B and C-17. He has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal with 2 Oak Leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Air Force Achievement Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters.  For service in Iraq and Afghanistan he was awarded the Air Medal and the Aerial Achievement Medal. Yaun currently holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the USAF Reserves.

He has been a member of the American Wood Protection Association since 2006.
